Ten of the Most Amazing Hotel Lobbies in the World

August 1, 2016

From sliding in to Barcelo Malaga to cooling off in the pool at NYC’s Room Mate Grace, it's time to snoop inside ten hotels with amazing lobby spaces. You'll want to book them right away.

It’s been said a million times but we’ll say it again: first impressions count.

It's one thing to book a hotel based on nice photos but another based solely on the entrance. Nothing beats that feeling of walking through the front door of a hotel and into the lobby, knowing at that moment your holiday has officially begun. And the first impression is cemented in your mind the second you clap eyes on the lobby, setting the tone for your whole hotel experience. With that in mind we’ve put together a round-up of the most awesome hotel lobbies from around the world courtesy of Hotels.com. The average five star hotels better up their game, stat.

1. Live Music Lobby at Ace Hotel London Shoreditch

The Ace Hotel, Shoreditch, London

Just too downright cool for its own good and that’s certainly the impression you get when you sashay through Ace Shoreditch Hotel in London's lobby space. A real social hub, you can work and relax in the day but party it up by night. If you’ve got a thirst, the lobby has a full bar, top-notch coffee shop and a 16-seat communal work table so you can send peaky emails without feeling like you're back in the office. With a gallery space with regularly rotating exhibitions by local artists, in the evening the whole space really comes alive and turns into a live music venue with DJ sets, musicians and a musical afternoon tea. With prices starting from £169, it’s perfect for 24-hour people as there’s a musical treat in store every night of the week.

2. Modern Living Room Lobby at CitizenM New York Times Square

Citizen M hotel, NYC

High design, cutting edge technology and unequalled comfort is fused into the CitizenM Times Square Hotel in NYC. Designed like an oversized living room, it features soaring 26 foot ceilings and floor to ceiling bookshelves showcasing an eclectic mix of art from the likes of Andy Warhol and David LaChapelle. With rooms available from £165, guests can check-in via the self-service tablets in under a minute and then put their feet up in the socially stunning surroundings. Relax in front of the fire, play chess, grab a bite from the 24-hour canteen or pull up a pew in the designated working areas and feel right at home.

3. The Playground Lobby at Barcelo Malaga Hotel

Barcelo Hotel, Malaga

Now this is a lobby that you can slide on into in style. With rooms priced from £80 per night, the Barcelo Malaga is a designer hotel in the heart of Malaga, with a cutting-edge lobby area you have to see to believe. The main attraction is the humongous stainless steel slide also known as the EDHA (short for "sliding structure for daring humans" in Spanish). This impressive slide takes guests straight from the first floor to the hotel’s trendy B-Lounge bar. If you’re in a real hurry for a tasty cocktail, you’ll find it a nifty little shortcut.

4. The Swimming Pool Lobby at Room Mate Grace, New York

Smack bang in the centre of midtown Manhattan, you’ll find the hidden gem that is Room Mate Grace. With its unique lobby space, complete with an indoor pool, sauna and steam room, it’s the perfect spot to escape the hustle and bustle of the city. With rooms priced from £125 per night, its stunning lobby has an enviable swimming pool as its stylish centrepiece so make sure you take a dip during your stay. The warm mood lighting along with the cushioned Colosseum-style seats, give this 24-hour pool, with the only swim-up bar in NYC, a cool pool-party vibe. If you don’t fancy a dip, you can always watch the action from the mezzanine bar.

5. The Instagram Lobby at Ovolo 1888 Darling Harbour, Sydney

Ovolo Hotel lobby, Sydney, Austrailia

Known as the first-ever Instagram hotel, the 1888 Darling Harbour is a boutique hotel combining Sydney’s old world charm with contemporary and vibrant design. The Instagram theme kicks off the second you hit the lobby, as guests check in via the social platform. The real photo-action though takes place at the selfie stand next to the lobby bar - a giant picture frame that’s been installed for guests to take snaps and tag #1888Hotel. Their image then instantaneously appears on screens at reception that show the live Instagram feed. The biggest Instagram incentive though is that those with more than 10K Instagram followers get to stay for free so no need to pay for the £115 per room per night. Better work on that profile then.

6. Self-Check-in Hotel Lobby at U&Me Hotel, Umeå in Sweden

UandMe hotel lobby, Sweden

Labelled as one of Europe’s most innovative hotels, the U&Me Hotel is a creative, hip hotel right on the river in cultural Umeå. Checking in (and out) is a high-tech affair, which is done from kiosks in the lobby area. Well if you can call it a lobby. With prices starting at £55 per room per night, the hotel doesn’t have a traditional lobby space (because everything is done online, even ordering hotel services), but the check-in pod sits at the heart of Umeå’s cultural arena Väven. Technically, the hotel has the world’s largest hotel library (Umeå City Library), a theatre, an art-house cinema, a museum, a conference centre and a deli – all accessible from the ‘lobby’ zone. We don’t think you’ll want (or need) to leave.

7. The Coffee Connoisseur Lobby at Lux Belle Mare, Mauritius

Coffee addicts unite. The second you step into the luxurious open-air lobby of the LUX Belle Mare in Mauritius, you’ll know you’re in caffeine laced paradise. The serene setting has a stunning water feature, relaxed seating area and a delightful waft of coffee in the air. This is because the lobby is also home to Café Lux, an impressive coffee bar where every day you can sample coffee from trained Baristas and even watch the coffee beans being roasted, before they’re shipped off to other hotels on the island. Rooms are priced from £70 per room per night.

8. The Garden Lobby at Hotel ICON, Hong Kong

Hotel Icon lobby

Asia’s largest indoor vertical garden designed by world-famous botanist, Patrick Blanc, can be found towering above the lobby space of Hotel Icon in Hong Kong’s lively Kowloon district. At this super stylish hotel, greenery meets a great view, as the indoor garden, which features over 8000 plants, acts as the entrance to the lobby café, Green, a slick place to grab a bite amidst the China's most bustling city. Prices start at £165 per room per night.

9. The Art Gallery Lobby at Molitor Paris by MGallery

Molitor Hotel Lobby

For 60 years Molitor was the most popular swimming baths in Paris, with its pools, galas and Avant-garde ambiance. It closed in 1989 and became a local haunt for artists, who turned it into an urban art venue. In 2014 Molitor was reborn as a hotel with the original pool and art at its heart. The lobby feels more like a pop up art gallery, with a graffiti covered Rolls Royce as its centrepiece. When you check in here, you’ll want to spend a good few hours perusing the lobby before even checking out where you’re sleeping. Prices start at £210 per exquisite room (with its own stunning porthole window) per night.

10. The Ultimate Lobby Bar at InterContinental Hong Kong

Intercontinental lobby, Hong Kong

Renowned for its breathtaking views of the Victoria Harbour and the city’s famous glittering skyline, InterContinental Hong Kong’s lobby offers an extraordinary vantage point of Hong Kong. Its wrap-around, expansive windows and panoramic views have made this the place to see and be seen for over three decades. The lobby has evolved with the times and its latest design features its most luxurious space yet with plenty of comfy of seating and mood lighting that'll chill you out. If in need of a refreshing tipple, you’ll want to check out the famous cocktails 'V-Sips' the second you check in. With room prices starting from £180 per night, you’ll know you made the right choice in hotel when you look out on to the city vista.
