Fairy-tale land of rugged mountains, tiny hillside villages and elegant baroque architecture, Austria is a landlocked central European country full of culture and natural beauty. Steeped in musical heritage and counting classical greats such as Mozart and Strauss among its past residents, the popularity of concert halls and festivals remains today.
Surrounded by the Czech Republic, Germany, Italy, Liechtenstein, Slovakia, Slovenia and Switzerland, the country is home to four and a half million people. The elegant capital, Vienna, is known for its Imperial Palaces and Museums Quartier as well as the picturesque Danube that spans the city.
Ski fans make the most of the rugged Alpine scenery, with snow towns like Innsbruck attracting competitors from around the world. Quaint Salzburg features story-book scenery, traditional drinking dens and several historic music venues. It attracts an arty, studenty crowd.
