Spanning an astonishing 9.8 million squared kilometres and home to around 325.7 million people, the United States of America is a worldwide giant. It's so big and varied in fact that moving from state to state feels more like moving between countries. And with Canada to the north and Central America to the south it's also the gateway to other worldwide wonders.

Take your pick from 50 states that offer everything from metropolis wonderlands such as New York City, San Francisco and Chicago to beach hot-spots like San Diego, Hawaii and Miami. Head south to discover creole cuisine, blues music and foot-stomping cowboys across New Orleans, Memphis and Austin, or escape from it all at one of the country's 58 national parks that include natural wonders such as the Grand Canyon, Yosemite and Zion National Park.

Whether you're hitting the Hollywood hills to go celeb-spotting, sleeping under the stars in Monument Valley, hitting the casinos in Vegas or posing for a photo outside of the White House, one thing's for sure: the USA will always leave you wanting more.

Best way to get around

Plane

Owing to the size of the USA, flying between cities is the quickest and easiest way to get around if you're short on time. There are plenty of smaller airports in harder-to-reach areas so there's not many places you can't access by plane.

Car

Packing up your car and driving along famous roads such as Route 66 is one of the best ways to experience what the US has to offer. Roads are well maintained and sign-posted, so the journey is as much fun as visiting the towns and cities themselves.

Bus

Travelling cross-country on Greyhound buses is easy, cheap and gives you the chance to save money on hotels by travelling overnight. Opt for the discovery pass which allows unlimited travel between a set period of time. Buses have toilets on-board but will make regular service stops.

Train

If you need a quicker alternative to a bus, opt for the train. Amtrak is the national rail company and covers all major destinations. It offers rail passes that are designed specifically for international travellers offering unlimited travel for either 15 or 30 days.
