If you've been known to perform The Sound of Music in front of your bedroom mirror, then you might like a trip to the Salzburg Festival this summer - it inspired the location for the famous musical. From July to August, the old town comes alive with music, theatre and opera. Enjoy early evening performances from some of the most accomplished musicians in Europe, before heading out to explore the bar-filled cobbled streets and lanes.
Running since the 1920s, the five-week Salzburg Festival sees the centre turn into a cultural hub, full of music, theatre and celebration. Featuring top operatic and concert performers, most of the events pay tribute to Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (who was born in the city). This full-on extravaganza features a range of shows, from spell-binding chamber music to traditional theatre productions. You'll also see plenty of opulent costumes including ball gowns, bodices and black ties.
Even if opera isn't really your thing, the experience of watching and listening to the world-class vocals and orchestras is pretty amazing - it's made even better thanks to the backdrop of Baroque halls and churches where the events are held. The festival's highlight is Hugo von Hofmannsthal’s take on Jedermann (Everyman), a morality play which was first produced here in 1920. Since then, it has been staged at the Salzburg Festival annually and has become a sort of cult symbol for the event.
If you're still craving a little 'do-re-mi-fa-so' after all this musical enlightenment, then you'll be pleased to know that the original Von Trapp Singers (inspiration for the family in The Sound of Music) sang at the festival in 1936. Given this - and the general popularity of the festival - tickets and accommodation sell out fast; book sooner rather than later if you're planning a trip. You can get back to the singing practice after.
- Get there: The city centre is easy to navigate on foot, but you can take the bus to more out-of-the-way venues.
