Spring truly arrives at Vienna’s Schönbrunn Palace Easter Market, where vendors from across the country and beyond showcase their finest wares.
- When? March - April 2018
- Where? Schönbrunn Palace, Vienna
- Price: Free
With the beautiful Baroque architecture of Schönbrunn Palace in the background, this has to be one of the best settings for a market anywhere in the world. The Palace is one of Austria’s most famous buildings, with its 1,441 rooms acting as the setting for many of the country’s biggest historical and cultural moments.
When you’re done admiring the architecture, however, it’s time to pay attention to the market itself. If you’re interested in learning about Austrian culture, it’s absolutely the place to be. Vendors from across the country come to sell their products, with many stalls offering traditional Austrian gifts and specialities. Easter eggs – both the edible and ornamental kind – are in abundance, with plenty of variety and colours.
You’re also likely to see handmade gifts, glassware, stoneware, woodcarvings, ceramics and art, but each year offers something new so you’ll have to visit for yourself. There are equally numerous food and drinks stalls selling sweet and savoury regional and national treats.
And on top of this, there is a host of activities to entertain you, from workshops and creative projects for all the family, to music and dance showcases and even an Easter egg hunt. There’s colour everywhere you turn, and a lively, enthusiastic atmosphere for all to enjoy.
It's the perfect place to go to ring in the Easter holidays and get a flavour of Austrian culture at its most inviting. All with the backdrop of one of the most stunning palaces in the world towering over you. So what are you waiting for?
- Get there: Take the tram to Schloss Schönbrunn (Schlossallee) or the metro to either Schönbrunn or Hietzing.
- Stay: Stay in Meidling or Hietzing to be nearby - both are outside of the city centre where accommodation will be cheaper.
