Vienna hits six weeks of cultural high notes with a packed programme of stage, musical, dance and opera performances during its internationally acclaimed festival.
You won't want to be waiting in the wings when the Vienna Festival takes to the stage in May. The Vienna Festival is one of the highlights of the cultural calendar and lasts for around five to six weeks in May and June. Around 200,000 visitors arrive each year to view and admire the wonderful performances and exhibitions which kick off most years with an open air concert held in front of City Hall.
The Vienna Festival began in post-war Vienna as a demonstration of the city’s ‘will to survive’ and was meant as a celebration of the beauty of Viennese culture after the ravages of war. It presents performances of contemporary stage art including drama, dance and opera, as well as series of concerts in the Vienna Konzerthaus. The festival creates new productions of popular classics as well as promoting newer works by international directors and in 2016 showed around 36 productions from 25 countries.
For 2017 the festival is being held under the direction of Tomas Zierhofer-Kin for the first time. The programme will be available as of the 16th of February 2017, after which point tickets will be available. This new incarnation of Vienna Festival will develop from the event's history and the spirit of what it set out to achieve upon its launch back in the 1950s. The hope is to create a bigger and better event in the future, positioning the Vienna Festival as a 'cross-cutting' art festival in the city.
Clearly much of the lineup for 2017 is under wraps, but sneak previews and information is being released on their Facebook page, so if you really can't wait until February the 16th we recommend keeping an eye out over there.
One thing's for sure, this is not an event you want to miss, so make sure you're sat in pride of place.
