They always say you should never judge a book by its cover - for Bruges' Cactus Festival, this is true of its name. This festival is anything but prickly: instead, it's a warm, loved up, small-scale fest with a big heart and chilled-out feel. We're in love already.
Within walking distance of the historic city centre, the festival (held each July) has a folksy, arty vibe with vintage airstream campers, multi-coloured bunting and pop up bars and food stalls. Cactus Festival has an intimate feel and small stages - previous headliners include Air, Damien Rice, Laura Mvula and The Cinematic Orchestra. There's also camping close by (reached via shuttle buses) which offers posher-than-your-average facilities. Note that camping passes must be booked separately.
Make a weekend of it or opt for the day ticket option. Rather handily, it's also possible to purchase a two-day combi ticket (i.e.: Friday and Sunday). Book fast though, Cactus Festival - about as prickly as a marshmallow after a bath - is likely to sell out fast.
