Looking for something interesting to do in Belgium this winter when heading to Brussels? Just chill (literally) at Hasselt's annual Ice Magic event (previously held in Bruges as the Snow and Ice Sculpture Festival) where almost 50 artists treat chilly onlookers to dozens of brrriliant icy displays and creations.
Most people look forward to the Christmas markets and buzzing city atmosphere when they head to Brussels. However, just an hour drive from the capital in Hasselt, Ice Magic offers something a bit more unique. Visitors can view incredible works of art thanks to hours and hours of work by talented sculptors. It's said that around 300 tonnes of crystal clear ice and 400 tonnes of snow flakes are used to create an icy wonderland in a thermal tent (usually at Station Square).
Every year has a different theme with previous themes including Disney and Wanagogo (a collection of 3D cartoon characters from apps), so make sure you look out for all the festival's latest announcements. It runs usually from late November to early January giving you lots of time to visit.
It goes without saying to wrap up warm as the tent temperature is set at a nippy -5 degrees Celsius. As we all know, nothing beats chilling in a snug hoody and a baggy pair of joggers.
