Everyone loves a good belly laugh. You know the one; clutching your sides, tears pouring down your cheeks, the small worry that you might just wet yourself kind of laugh. If you're partial to this type of uncontrollable laughter then pack some spare pants and get yourself tickets to Just For Laughs, the world's largest international comedy festival.
This month-long celebration showcases everything from stand-up and sketches to improvisation and live podcast recordings. Pantomimes, acrobats and jugglers create a carnival atmosphere to surround the outdoor events and have become a defining characteristic of Just For Laughs. The comedy shows are hosted in streets, plazas and entertainment venues all over the city. Long established relationships with comedy stars enables Montréal to recruit the likes of Dave Chapelle, Jeff Goldblum, Weird Al Yankovic and the casts of The Simpsons and South Park. That's not to say that it has forgotten its roots; local talent and rising stars are integral to the scope and variety that is aspired to every July.
Of course, it wouldn't be a comedy festival without some weird and wonderful events, one of which is the Twins Parade; a popular recurring event at the festival. Featuring twins and triplets from Montréal and beyond, the parade usually has a theme (last year it was cowboys and cowgirls) and sees twins, triplets and a host of other siblings dressing up and parading down the Place des Festivals.
#travioortip: Check out the sister festivals in Toronto, Chicago and Sydney if you can't make it to Montréal this July.
The few hundred thousand tickets that are annually sold are a mere shadow of the millions that attend unticketed performances in the street. Just For Laughs has widened its influence with the launch of television show Just For Laughs: Gags and sister festivals in Toronto, Chicago and Sydney.
The 2017 incarnation of the show will be the 35th annual festival and with famous faces like Judd Apatow and Jimmy Carr making appearances in 2016's lineup, we can't wait to see what's in store. One for the comedy fans among us, this festival is going to be a laugh a minute and it's certainly not one to be missed. Just don't forget you spare pants, you know, just in case.
