In 1689, 1,500 Iroquois marauders took blood vengeance on crop producers for 1,200,000 bushels of corn burned by the French. The folk music that plays near the site of the Lachine massacre every June behoves itself to social injustices, a recurring motif of American folk music, as well as integrating Celtic, classic and bluegrass styles to name a few.
The first Montréal Folk Festival was a one-day event which attracted around 500 people. The event has since evolved into a five-day spectacle with indoor and outdoor concerts and events. At the heart of the festival lies friendship, family and community. With family-friendly, local acts filling many of the performance roles and the festival running entirely off of volunteer help, it's certainly a community affair.
Described as one of Montréal's most chilled festivals, the Montréal Folk Festival features around 40 free outdoor shows across the five days, as well as a small artisan village with nearly as many stalls.
Attendees can camp for the last two days of the festival in the Esplanade du Centenaire by the Lachine canal, offering seclusion from the pace of the city as well as learning new skills through taught workshops. The workshops are also family friendly, and teach skills like camping.
Whether you're here for the local talent and folk music, or just to have a good time camping with friends, the Montréal Folk Festival seems to have it all on offer. Why not grab your camping gear and your dancing shoes and sway to the beat of the Montréal Folk Festival this July.
