Each year, San Pedro (Saint Peter) and San Pablo (Saint Paul) are honoured in a week-long festival. They are said to have given their lives for Jesus, so where better to celebrate than the town that adopted San Pedro as their namesake?
Fiesta de San Pedro y San Pablo begins in the week leading up to the 29th of June and sees plenty of festivities taking place. The 29th is the big one though, and the festival truly begins with a mass in the Church of San Pedro. The procession of statues, where the image of Saint Peter is carried through the streets, takes place following mass and is aided by a procession of musicians, dancers and members of the congregation, who return to the church for communion.
The festival can be traced back as far as the fourth century and is now celebrated through music, folk dance, traditional food, rodeo and of course the procession. San Pedro de Atacama turns into a party town and can get pretty rowdy in the evenings. Similar religious festivals are found throughout the continent, but the one in San Pedro de Atacama is said to be the best.
Time your next visit to the town for the end of June, if you really want to live (and party) like the locals.
