Beer and dragons may not be your average party mix, but trust us - it works. If you don't believe us then head to Hong Kong's Dragon Boat Carnival held every June. This three-day celebration combines traditional dragon boat racing, the San Miguel beer festival and a whole load of revellers.
Featuring a jam-packed schedule of local, national and international dragon boat racing groups, it is one of the biggest sporting events on the Hong Kong calendar. Around 4000 rowers compete (many are dressed in colourful costumes) for one of several prestigious titles and despite the festive atmosphere, the teams take the event pretty seriously. Spectators can watch from the comfort of a shady waterside San Miguel tent - the beer fest is handily adjacent to the waterfront to allow prime viewing so make sure you pay it a visit. After all, it makes for better viewing when you have an ice cold one in hand.
A frosty cold tipple and an exciting rowing race? Sounds good to us - just get there early if you're hoping for a top viewing spot. And go easy on the beer, you might start seeing actual dragons if you don't pace yourself.
- Get there: Victoria Harbour is situated between Hong Kong Island and the mainland.
- Stay: Book accommodation on the northern tip of Hong Kong Island or the southern tip of the mainland.
