How long do you spend at a festival? A weekend? A week? How about 47 days? Welcome to Dubrovnik Summer Festival, a multi-month event which will leave you feeling more cultured than your average heavy weekender. This civilised affair is more red wine than Red Bull with events dotted around the idyllic city of Dubrovnik and beyond.
Showcasing the very best of Croatian and European theatre, classical music and vocal ensembles, the Dubrovnik Summer Festival will be celebrating its 67th year in 2016. With over 2000 artists from around the world and 20 different venues, it's unsurprising that the festival attracts upwards of 60,000 visitors per year.
Acclaimed musicians from around the globe – including Mexican born pianist Enrique Bátiz - will perform at the festival as well as Croatian choirs, operatic societies and dance troupes. The festival is also marking the anniversary of 400 years since Shakespeare's death with a wow-factor performance of Othello at Fort Lovrjenac.
If you're looking for something slightly edgier then the ZKM production of #workingtitleantigone is a good bet; it places the historic city of Thebes in the centre of a terrorist attack with the young Antigone portrayed as an internet activist. Alternatively head over to the Instagram-worthy island of Lokrum for performative dance, ballet and more.
Give your eardrums a break from the usual bass-heavy Adriatic raves and opt for a spot of Shakespeare and a brain-detox instead this summer.
- Get there: Fly to Dubrovnik Airport and then drive or take a taxi into the city.
- Stay: Find somewhere to stay in the city centre so you'll be able to travel between venues with ease.
