If you're off to Croatia this summer, it probably wouldn't occur to you to attend a film festival. However, Split's annual film festival begins at the start of September, and it's worth hanging around for.
Split Film Festival is one of the oldest events of its kind in Croatia, offering independent film-makers and movie fans the chance to experience new, creative, 'radical' works. The theme of 2017's festival is '(Cruel) Reality >< Virtual (Reality)' which hints towards the kind of work which will be shown. Screenings take place throughout Split, with the exact films to be announced towards the end of July. Alongside this, a number of workshops, performances and discussions will be hosted.
The festival aims to show films which are outside the mainstream, so you'll no doubt discover a new thing or two to rave about. With the films judged by directors, producers and critics, you may even see a few famous faces (particularly if you fancy yourself as a bit of a film buff). The winners will be awarded the Tail sculpture, a work of art by Gorki Žuvela.
If you're looking to bring some joy back into the wilting summer, you might find happiness at the bottom of a bucket of popcorn. It's worth a look.
