You may not be able to join in, but competitors on horseback celebrate this age-old festival in Split during the first half of August. Taking place in Sinj (a town in the continental part of Split-Dalmatia County) the traditional Alka event is now over 300 years old and makes for an exciting afternoon out for visitors looking to immerse themselves in Croatian culture.
During April, an Alka-based photography exhibition will open its doors at Hotel Marmont in Split, with content being hand-picked from a 'rich archive' of fascinating snaps.
- Get there: The drive to Sinj will take around 45 minutes from Split.
- Stay: Find accommodation in Sinj if you plan to attend the whole festival.
