Head to Zagreb in July for the International Folklore Festival which celebrates Croatia's customs, traditions and culture.
How's your knowledge of Croatian folklore? We'll admit, ours isn't great. All the more reason to head to Croatia this July for Zagreb's International Folklore Festival. Running for over 50 years, this smorgasbord of culture, music, dance and performance celebrates Croatian national identity and folk roots.
Throughout the festival, expect to see plenty of historic costumes including the distinctive red coat and white sock combo, famed as part of Croat tradition. The event also hosts a world music concert that features live musicians plus a dance workshop which encourages participants. There'll also be plenty of chances to get your fill of local fare with pop up stalls and restaurants serving up traditional dishes and drinks (a must try is the bitter liqueur Pelinkovac, a much-loved national favourite).
Zagreb's International Folklore Festival attracts a range of local visitors plus plenty of Croats living abroad or in neighbouring countries. Different events take place in a variety of citywide venues but one of the most popular spots is the main square where all the largest performances take place. If you're planning a city break to Zagreb, this culturally rich festival is a great time to visit. And hey, when you next get a pub quiz question about Croatian customs, we know who'll be winning.
*We do our very best to verify the dates of our events but please check with the official event provider before booking your flights. We would hate for you to be disappointed!
