If you think that the likes of Germany, France and Belgium have the monopoly on festive markets then think again. Up and coming eastern European capitals are quickly making their mark on the Christmas season and nowhere more so than Croatia's capital, Zagreb. A vibrant city with magical charm, the winter months see the main square transformed into a seasonal, much-loved market.
Traditional stalls selling everything from locally made gifts to vintage treasures line the streets while food pop-ups serve favourites like roasted meat, fresh bread and fritule (sugared doughnuts). Zagreb's main square (Ban Josip Jelačić) is the best place to get to the heart of the festivities where traditional choirs perform and jolly traders sell their wares. The fair (offering festive themed rides) is decked out in twinkling lights while the side streets offer cosy bars that serve spiced mulled wine and hot chocolate.
The best way to explore is on foot - just make sure you wrap up as December temperatures can be chilly. If you’re planning to go, make sure you book accommodation fast as the market is extremely popular with local Croatians. With all the festive cheer, delicious food and warm atmosphere this is one seasonal fest not to miss.

- Stay: Find a hotel close to the main square so you can walk to the markets.
