Calling all budding Hitchcocks, future Allens and popcorn lovers (so that's everyone then) - Zagreb Film Festival is returning to the Croatian capital for its 15th year this November.
With plenty of feature films and short films to get stuck into, this nine-day festival attracts the most excited film buffs through its doors. A buzzing schedule of events includes screenings, films and programmes in an action-packed schedule which celebrates emerging and up-and-coming filmmakers.
Competition categories include feature films and shorts, plus three other categories: PLUS (for high-schoolers), Together Again (for those who have already screened features at the festival) and Checkers (for short films by those who have not made features yet). Checkers is widely viewed as one of the most important platforms for Croatian talent in film, so it's worth trying to get tickets for. There are other events taking place throughout the festival, and 2016 saw some pretty cool side programmes. From 'mockumentaries' to special screenings and Eastern European comedies, there was something for everyone.
During the festival, accommodation gets snapped up quickly and ticketed events sell out fast so make sure to book early. After all, you don't want to miss out on the next big thing (or, let's be honest, the popcorn).
- Get there: Fly to Zagreb and use public transport or taxis to get around the city.
- Stay: Base yourself near the city centre so you can easily travel between venues.
