City breaks and food go together like Sundays and roast dinners. What better way to experience the tastes, flavours and local dishes of a city than by table hopping through an area's restaurants? If you're in Zagreb this October you're in luck - the city will be once again hosting its ever popular restaurant week. Forks at the ready...
Showcasing the best cuisine the Croatian capital has to offer, this week long event (also held in March) sees restaurants throughout the city offer special tasting menus which usually comprise of an appetiser, main course, dessert and glass of wine. Even better are the rates; most are offered at a hugely discounted price (starting from around £12). From high end eateries to traditional taverns, you can sample a range of different delicacies and specially created menus.
The region's famous for its traditional dishes which include Zagrebački odrezak (grilled veal steaks stuffed with cheese and ham), štrukli (baked stuffed pastries) and buzara (sautéed shellfish with garlic and white wine) - the hard part is choosing what to eat. Luckily, with the budget friendly prices, you can sample more than one menu - just make sure you go hungry, this festival's for the hard-core foodies.
- Get there: Fly to Zagreb and use public transport or taxis to get around the city.
- Stay: Base yourself near the city centre so you'll be close to plenty of restaurants.
