The Procession of St Lazarus takes place just before the Greek Orthodox celebration of Easter, with an icon of the figure paraded through the streets towards the Church as onlookers dance and sing.
A priest stands at the front of the procession and leads the ceremony inside the church and although things are slightly more serious when inside, there's a party atmosphere outside as the sun beams down onto Larnaca's coastal streets.
Part of the route of the procession runs along the sea front promenade, where there's a good selection of restaurants selling traditional Cyprian food. Even if you don't witness the church ceremony itself, the lively crowds in the streets will be enough to make it a memorable day out.
- Get there: Fly to Larnaca International Airport then take a taxi to the city centre. Use local buses or taxis to get around.
- Stay: Find accommodation near the beach for picturesque views.
