We all need a bit of downtime. Next time you want to seek solace from the daily grind rather than hit the pub or gorge on Game of Thrones, why not transport yourself to a picturesque ruined abbey for a spot of relaxing, awe-inspiring music? Welcome to the annual Bellapais Music Festival in North Cyprus. Just a 45 minute drive from central Nicosia, this dreamy event features everything from orchestras to operatic wonders.

Running for more than twenty years, the festival features national and international classical greats. Known as 'The Abbey of Peace,' the ruined monastery dates back to the 13th century and has sweeping views down to the Mediterranean Sea. The centrepiece - of what is now an acclaimed concert hall - is the beautiful piano which is played throughout the festival by both soloists and as an accompaniment.

Tickets for the event are extremely popular and the quaint village of Bellapais, complete with petite Cypriot restaurants and stone built hotels, fills up quickly during the festival. Book early to guarantee a place and get your dose of ultimate chilled out bliss. Just don't get so relaxed that you miss your flight home (actually, that sounds like a great idea).

  • Get there: It's a 45 minute drive from Nicosia to Bellapais Abbey, so rent a car or take a taxi.
  • Stay: If you are attending the festival over a few days, stay in Beylerbeyi to be nearby. Otherwise, find accommodation in Nicosia.
