For those that say opera is essentially shouting and screaming, we all should be experts. Luckily, that's not really the case and it couldn't be more evident than at Pafos Aphrodite Festival where you can witness a dazzling opera display at Medieval Castle Square in beautiful Paphos.
Usually taking place during the first weekend of September, Paphos' Aphrodite Festival commemorates the goddess of love and beauty, with tourists and locals alike celebrating the occasion in Kouklia Village. The venue itself lies in Old Paphos and is known as one of the 'most prosperous kingdom cities on the island', providing the perfect mix of history and modern culture, as well as breathtaking scenery of the ocean.
Spectators have been treated to some incredible performances in previous years including Verdi's 'La Traviata' and Puccini's 'Turandot'. As expected, the festivities go on well into the night with various other spectacles delighting the crowd, jubilant dancing locals and market stalls selling traditional treats and drinks.
Pafos Aphrodite Festival is considered one of the biggest events in Kouklia all year, so leave the opera to the professionals and the rest of us can be the experts after the performance on Paphos' lively Bar Street.
