Party animals, get excited, because Copenhagen Distortion is the ultimate festival for those wanting to let loose.
Music of all genres finds its home at this unique event, which is spread across the first five days of June. There’s the traditional sounds of pop, rock, folk and jazz, as well as experimental techno, hip hop and classical music – all presented by up-and-coming artists and DJs.
It’s a celebration of the alternative and Copenhagen’s complex urban identity, which is also demonstrated through the festival’s creative use of space. Events take place in the city's coolest nightspots as well as a host of surprise locations, such as converted buses, forests, warehouses, canal boats, and more. One-off location secret parties are held at swimming pools, under bridges or in museums – wherever you look there’s a party in an obscure part of the city.
The festival also has a lot going on for those with slightly calmer pursuits in mind. For example, there are exhibitions, shows and internet presentations, pop-up restaurants and also events for children, which all work to add to the festival's ambiance of creativity and youthful energy.
Copenhagen Distortion was first held in 1998 and has grown at an incredible rate in recent years. With hundreds of thousands of visitors each day, it’s one of the largest annual gatherings in Europe. But despite its size, each event is curated and personalised so that everyone, regardless of their tastes, can have a great time.
Since the beginning, Distortion has been a hosting project, inviting local icons of street life and club culture to host their own event, reception or show. Some of the world's leading brands that have got involved include Vice Magazine, Fabric - London, Resident Advisor, Adidas, Ed Bangers, Kompakt, Trouw - Amsterdam, Fact Magazine, Red Bull Music Academy... the list continues.
And while we’re talking names, the likes of Hot Chip, Simian Mobile Disco, Spank Rock, Sebastien Tellier and Diplo & M.I.A. were booked for Distortion Club events years before they became music heroes of international renown.
Described variously as ‘an old-school rave’, ‘orchestrated chaos’ and ‘a party-labyrinth’, Copenhagen Distortion is really not one to be missed. So grab your dancing shoes and book your tickets now.
