If your image of the circus involves clowns, water-pistol buttonholes and dancing ponies, then you may be in for a shock. Cirko Festival in Helsinki is a nine-day extravaganza which showcases elite performers, trapeze artists and dancers in a dazzling programme of different events.
The festival is the largest contemporary circus festival across Norway, Finland and Sweden and attracts thousands of visitors every year. Cirko - otherwise known as The Centre for New Circus - stages this event annually, with performances from globally recognized artists and groups. Throughout Cirko Festival, the audience gets a chance to witness death-defying aerial acrobatics and jaw-dropping examples of human courage and strength.
A festival highlight is Luis and Pedro Sartori Do Vale, whose show 'Dois' tells the story of two brothers through incredible stunts, archery, movement and trust exercises. Another must-see is the show performed by Cirkus Cirkör, who celebrate their 20th anniversary this year. Expect gravity defying feats and lots of 'don't try this at home' moments as the realms of truth and the imaginary are blurred.
The events are hosted across several different venues - the largest is in Helsinki's Suvilahti, which offers 1,400 square metres of performance space. Book early to ensure tickets - shows are often sell-outs. (We promise there won't be any giant red nose gaffs).
- Get there: Fly to Helsinki then drive or take a taxi to the city. Use the metro to travel between venues.
- Stay: Book accommodation in Töölö to be near to the city centre and for easy travel. The tram runs through the east of the neighbourhood.
