Plenty of things get better with age - wine, cheese and David Attenborough to name a few. Yet an even better oldie (but a goodie too) is Strasbourg Christmas Market in France. Established in 1570 the event is Europe's oldest Christmas market, so we reckon they know a thing or two about how to celebrate festive cheer.
Nicknamed the 'Capital of Christmas', Strasbourg welcomes thousands of festive revellers each year, who come to celebrate the season in true traditional style. The market features over 300 stalls spread across 12 different sites, which sell everything from mulled wine and mince pies to handmade decorations and bespoke gifts. The market also boasts ten kilometres of illuminated wreaths and garlands (handy if you're trying to navigate your way home after a few glasses of seasonal grog).
The centrepiece of the festival is the huge Christmas tree in Place Kléber; there are also choir performances on certain days throughout the six week event. The market is extremely popular and hotel rooms book up fast, so reserve well in advance if you're planning to go. After all, a festival this historic deserves a visit - like Sir David it only gets better with time.
- Get there: Use the local tram system to get to the various stall locations if it's too far to walk.
- Stay: Check out hotels close to the Cathédrale Notre Dame de Strasbourg as many of the markets are close by.
