Dresden Striezelmarkt (Christmas Market) 2017

TBC Nov 2017 - Dec 2017
Altmarkt Square

One of Germany's oldest documented Christmas markets, Dresden's Striezelmarkt, is an annual Christmas market that has traded for the last 580 years.

Celebrate the most wonderful time of the year in Dresden with the Striezelmarkt. There's a cup of gluehwein with your name on it.

What started as a one-day market back in 1434 has progressed into something far bigger and much more exciting in 2016. With around 250 stands selling everything from Christmas treats to arts and crafts, it's easy to see why more than three million people visit the market each year. The booths open from 10 a.m. until 9 p.m. daily (with the exception of a 2 p.m. finish on Christmas Eve), so you'll have plenty of time to browse the stalls and try some delicious delicacies. You might need more than one visit to see the whole market though, as you probably can't see it all in in a day.

The market gets its name from the famous stollen, or 'striezel' as it was previously known, which is a German version of Christmas cake. One of the main events at the month-long Christmas market is the Dresden Stollen Festival, and the famous Dresden Christmas cake is available from many of the market stalls. There's also a Pyramid Festival, which celebrates the world's tallest Christmas pyramid (we didn't know that was a thing either), which calls the Striezelmarkt home. It is comprised of a number of tiers adorned with candles and Christmas figurines; usually these are about 1 metre high, but the Striezelmarkt claims a pyramid of 14 metres tall.

Whilst browsing the market stalls for trinkets and keepsakes, visitors can stop and watch glass-blowers and bakers show off their skills at the craft market. Alternatively, view the whole market from the top of the ferris wheel, or join in with the kids and ride the two-storey carousel. You'll have plenty of opportunity to grab some tasty stollen and a cup of gluehwein (mulled wine) before posing for a picture under the world's largest Christmas arch. Rock that festive selfie.

Pick a hotel in Altstadt so you'll be close to the Striezelmarkt and benefit from a central location for the rest of your time in Dresden.
