If you like tea cup rides with a side of culture then you're in for a treat in Dresden this summer. Elbhangfest festival will welcome fair ground rides, markets, talks, concerts and a parade. Part street festival, part cultural celebration, this two day June weekender offers plenty of different activities for every taste - from 'grown up' talks to wacky and playful events. (We aren't just excited about the tea cup rides, honest).
Taking place on the hillside next to the Elbe river (in the arty area between Loschwitz and Pillnitz), the festival includes a huge fairground, with everything from bumper cars to waltzers. Spreading through parks and squares, Elbhangfest also offers market stalls that sell local handicrafts and traditional gifts as well as plenty of delicious pop-ups (keep your eyes peeled for the famous bratwurst stands). If you're looking to make a night of it, then don't miss one of the several free concerts which span a range of genres; there are also theatre shows, guided tours and art installations.
Elbhangfest opens with a huge parade (which has a quirky, street party feel) and the whole event runs from the 'blaues wonder' bridge to Pillnitz Castle. Make a day of it and spend the time wandering between stalls, shows and fair ground rides - perfect for big kids.
- Get there: There's an extensive transport network in Dresden made up of buses, trams and S-Bahn trains.
