Five glasses of this stuff and you've had your five-a-day right? Frankfurt's Apple Wine Festival marks an important part of the city's social culture with an event that brings thousands of locals and tourists to revel in the festival atmosphere and enjoy some apple wine cocktails in the sun.
Known to the locals as Apfelwein, Ebbelwoi and various other names, this Frankfurt national drink dates back hundreds of years and this city is one of the best places to enjoy the many different varieties. Although apple wine is said to have been invented by the Greeks or Romans, by 800 AD it had entered Germany and some 700 years later it was a Frankfurt cult favourite.
Hosted at the city's Roßmarkt, this event spans nine days with a number of different apple wine varieties presented at an array of booths and stalls. From fruity cocktails to tasty mixed blends - it turns out the Germans love this national delicacy as much as their beer. While the stands keep the drinks flowing, a stage program is also present featuring old-school entertainment, local cult bands and talented musicians who create a relaxed yet vibrant atmosphere to accompany the occasion. Don't forget to purchase one of the famous 'bembel' jugs from which apple wine is traditionally served.
While we would never encourage excessive drinking, we will always be in agreement that apples are good for you (even if they do come in alcoholic form).
- Get there: Fly into Frankfurt Airport and use the S-Bahn to travel into the city. Hauptwache is the closest stop to the venue.
