Witness unbelievable feats of strength as international men and women of steel put their endurance to the test with a grueling programme of athletics.
Known as one of the largest sporting events in the city, IRONMAN sees contenders make their way to Frankfurt in July to test their strength and endurance.
Tourists and locals can grab themselves some food and drink and watch the night runs, a five km relay at the Mainkai for 'hobby and amateur athletes', swimming events and long-distance marathons.
Athletes are expected to take on the Langener Waldsee waters and must also pedal their way through a bike race running down the centre of Frankfurt, with crowds of thousands cheering them along the way.
Many onlookers flock to the promenade along the Main river to set themselves down in a picturesque spot as IRONMAN gets underway.
Even if you aren't interested in the competition itself, the sheer number of people that turn up to cheer on the IRONMAN runners and riders ensure the day has a buzz about it, and this electric atmosphere lasts until the sun sets above Frankfurt.
- Get there: Fly into Frankfurt Airport and use the S-Bahn to travel into the city.
- Stay: Check out hotels in the city centre but keep in mind that demand will be high at this time of year so book as early as possible.
