Bavarian-style Christmas markets have spread like wildfire throughout the world but the annual Christkindlmarkt in Munich demonstrates that the original remains the best.
The origins of the Christmas Market date back to the so-called "Nicholaus Markets" of the 14th century, although the event settled in its current location as recently as 1972.
The centrepiece is the 100-foot Christmas tree which is erected in front of the town hall by the local fire brigade 14 days before the market opens. For added Christmas effect, the tree is lit up with 2500 candles.
From Stille Nacht being played in its original German from the balcony of the Town Hall to Germany's largest manger market in Neuhauser Strasse, there's plenty of Christmas tradition to soak up – while sipping a piping hot Glühwein.
- Get there: Fly to Munich then use the train to reach the city centre.
- Stay: Look at hotels in the Alstadt area to stay central.
