Munich International Film Festival

TBC Jun 2018
Various venues, Munich, Germany

Discover cinematic treasures and mingle with film-makers at Munich's laid-back annual Film Festival.

Overshadowed by its more famous stablemate in Berlin, the Munich Film Festival nevertheless offers something a little bit different.

As one exhibitor said: “In Cannes, they buy and sell films: in Munich, they discover them.”

Held every year in late June since 1983, the festival focuses on feature films and documentaries with around 200 being shown at the Gasteig cultural centre and other cinemas in central Munich.

The mood is relaxed and informal - filmmakers often mingle and discuss things with the 70,000 cineastes who make up the audience.

One particularly enjoyable aspect of the Munich Film Festival is the opportunity to attend free, open-air screenings every night in the piazza of the festival centre in Gasteig. Every year brings a new theme - recent ones have included Jazz, Pirates, Las Vegas and Masters of Disaster. All in all, a wonderful night at the movies.
