Glittering wonderlands, festive performances and free sweet treats: Welcome to Athens' Christmas Market.
- When? TBC Dec 2017 - Jan 2018
- Where? Syntagma Square, Athens
- Price: Free
One of the city's best loved festivities, the Athens Christmas Market is a must see if you're visiting the Greek capital this December. From elaborate winter wonderlands and huge glittering trees, to spiced local pastry stalls and traditionally costumed performers, this historic city puts on a celebration fit for the Gods.
Centred around Syntagma Square and Athens Concert Hall (which stages magical ballets like Swan Lake), the festival also has designated 'winter wonderland areas' complete with fake snow and glittering lights. Stop off for a skate on the ice rink, shop for local goodies or sample some traditional Greek Christmas cookies (melomakarona, koulouria and kourabiedes). Even better, they're often free! At Christmas, shops have a tradition of offering their shoppers free sweets and cakes.
Part festival of heritage, part seasonal merriment, Athens' Christmas Market manages to turn the capital into a welcoming place of song, music and yummy food. Make the most of a midwinter Greek escape by heading along to join the festivities - we're sure the ancient Gods would approve.
