If you're in Athens in March, join the throngs of jubilant and patriotic Athenians on the streets, as they celebrate Greek Independence Day.
- When? 25th March
- Where? Across Greece, particularly in the capital - Athens
- Price: Free
Deck yourself in white and blue, get ready to party with the locals and learn the Greek National Anthem (okay, maybe not the last one) as Greek Independence Day is celebrated in Athens. This historic and much loved celebration is marked nationwide but the Greek capital is the best place to join in the fun.
Heralding the start of War of Greek Independence in 1821, the day is marked by local parades and flag raising across the city - keep an eye out for the processions of local school children wearing traditional costumes (it's rather sweet). In the centre, festivities take on more austere tone, with military parades, marching bands and patriotic performances.
In the evening, locals fill the streets to feast, dance and generally celebrate the Greek way of life. Expect plenty of excellent food and wine (most of which is locally produced) plus authentic Greek dancing and musical shows - the perfect time to impress the Athenians with your perfect Greek, perhaps?
- Get there: Fly to Athens International Airport (ATH) then use the metro or bus to get around.
- Stay: Celebrations will be taking place all over the city, so avoid the centre if you want a peaceful night.
