They say fashion always comes back around, and with the The Medieval Rose Festival you'll see this even rings true for trends that were last in 500 years ago. For a couple of weekends, Rhodes Town is turned into a huge medieval event with various forms of entertainment and energetic displays inspired by the Middle Ages.
Since 2006, this one-of-a-kind event has become somewhat of a unique tradition on the Greek island of Rhodes. A medieval vibe sweeps Rhodes Town which has a surrounding wall and moat to add to its ancient buildings, making it a perfect venue for a festival depicting the Middle Ages. The event kicks off with a walk from the castle along the Streets of the Knights led by a medieval entourage before the festivities really get under way.
Various cultural events accompany traditional competitions such as archery and chess contests which all encourage visitors to get involved, where as fantastic spectacles can be enjoyed from horse-riders, dancers, musicians, jugglers, jesters, fire-eaters and more. Wooden stalls are set up selling handicrafts and popular snacks from the Middle Ages. And for those that are a little hungrier, the town puts on several huge banquets fit for a king.
The Medieval Rose Festival is put together by a non-profit organisation who work to create an atmosphere imitating Greece during the Middle Ages by providing a fun event that also gives a great history lesson on this historic town's past.
If you want to truly embrace the medieval spirit, maybe you should ditch the skinny jeans and dig out the robes.
