Somewhere at the end of a rainbow sits a pot of gold - or so we're told. In Senggigi, Lombok, you'll find one of the craziest, brightest parades in Indonesia instead.
With brighter colours than Picasso's palette, the Senggigi Festival brings the sounds, sights and tastes of traditional Lombok to one of the island's most popular beachfront towns. Held over several days, there's plenty to keep visitors entertained with a busy schedule of performances.
The event begins with an opening parade through the town with dancers and live musicians sporting brightly-hued costumes. Cultural shows depicting local customs and legends pass by the watching crowds while street food stalls serve up a range of traditional favourites. Different villages and regions are represented through different costumes; a lively fair, sailing competition and customary 'rice fight' add to the festive atmosphere.
If you're in search of a rainbow (or the next best thing) then Senggigi Festival is the perfect extra to add onto your Lombok adventure. Half traditional extravaganza, half party-with-the-locals, this colourful, cultural party is a great way to learn more about the island. If you're planning to attend, make sure you book accommodation early, the event sees this small beachy town pack with people quickly.
We've yet to find that pot of gold, so let's settle for a party instead.
