Can't stop Diggin' on James Brown? We've got the perfect Travioor remedy: Porretta Soul Festival in Bologna. One of the biggest of its kind in Europe, this summer festival attracts an international audience and some of the world's greatest funk and soul performers.
Now a staple part of the global soul music scene, Porretta Soul Festival has been running for over 25 years. Previous years have seen plenty of famous artists grace its stage, including Chaka Chan, Irma Thomas and the Neville Brothers. Music lovers from around the world flock to Rufus Thomas Park in Porretta to enjoy the four day music festival.
Established in 1988 as a tribute to soul legend Otis Reading, the festival has evolved over the years and today has the support of the Stax Museum of American Soul Music and the Center For Southern Folklore (both in Memphis). In 2016, Grammy award nominated Bobby Rush headlined and there were sets from George McCrae, John Ellison, Fred Wesley + The New JBS, plus the Bey Paule Band house band.
Porretta Soul Festival also hosts plenty of young performers and encourages budding soul musicians to showcase their work. If getting funky has left you worn out, perk up with wholesome dishes from Soul Food Street or visit the onsite bar for a tipple.
If you visit on Thursday tickets are half price - Friday, Saturday and Sunday sell out quickly so book early to get yours. Although not in Bologna's city centre, Porretta Terme is only a 45 minute drive away by car or one hour by public transport (extra local buses are often put on to help with the crowds). If you arrive in Porretta early (or you're just diggin' for a daytime soul fix), there are free concerts on the Rufus Thomas Café Stage in Piazza della Libertà (the main square) from 11am to 7pm.
