A festival that ends up in a crypt may sound like the stuff of nightmares but Florence's Festa di Santa Reparata does exactly that. Held every October, this religious festival is a wonderful way to experience traditional Florentine celebrations; just take a friend if you're easily spooked.
Held in honour of the ancient Santa Reparata Cathedral, the day-long festival takes visitors back to Roman Italy. Today the Santa Maria del Fiore Church lies on top of the cathedral’s original remains but archaeological digs during the 20th century have ensured that the traditional floorplan is still visible. As well as talks, workshops and guided tours of Roman Florence, there's also a historical parade which takes place in the city centre.
The real highlight however is the evening ceremony. Held in Santa Reparata's crypt, this one-of-a-kind event is a magical, moving and memorable celebration that honours Florentine history. Even if it's a bit spook-tacular, this is one for your Italian bucket list.
- Get there: Florence Airport is a 20 minute train ride from the cathedral, located in the city centre.
- Stay: Find a hotel in the city centre - everything is within walking distance.
