Looking for a dash of Christmas spirit alongside your Italian winter break? If you're visiting Florence in December you're in luck; this Tuscan grande dame has one of Italy's best loved Christmas markets. Festive displays adorn the streets and merry locals join in the fun - this is one cheerful celebration not to miss.
The main market event takes place around Piazza di Santa Croce, one of Florence's most beautiful squares (the city itself is a UNESCO listed world heritage site). Here, you'll find traditional gifts plus stalls serving up spiced cider and Italian cakes. The city plays homage to the country's Catholic traditions during the festivities, with religious parades, serenading choirs and a huge nativity scene in the Piazza del Duomo.
As the month progresses the city undergoes a beautiful transformation as shop windows are decked out in seasonal displays and lights; on December 8th a huge glittering Christmas tree is unveiled in the city centre. If you're feeling a bit 'bah humbug' about the season then this is the place to up your spirits. And let's be honest - who can turn down Italian festive food?
- Get there: Take the bus to Verdi or Magliabechi for the Piazza, or take a taxi.
- Stay: Book accommodation in Santa Croce to be nearby.
