Truffle tastings, truffle hunting and truffle based competitions, welcome to San Miniato's White Truffle Fair.
If you turn up to San Miniato's White Truffle Fair expecting pralines and chocolate treats then you'll be somewhat surprised. Rather than sweet sensations, this annual forage is in fact celebrating the region's truffle (mushroom-like roots considered a delicacy across the globe) harvest. Join in with tastings, learn about the gathering process and wander between stalls - just don't expect any chocolate at the end.
Since it began in 1969 the fair has grown in size and is today recognized as one of the premier exhibitions of its kind in the world. Alongside the famed truffles, local wine, cheese and meats will be on offer (so you might want to go with an appetite). Adding to the festivities are several quirky competitions and prizes, including ones for the biggest truffle found and the oldest truffle hunter.
Located an hour west of central Florence, the town of San Miniato is perfect for an afternoon or day trip from the city; if you're visiting the Tuscan capital on a weekend in November then the White Truffle Fair is well worth the trip. After all, who needs persuading when there's tasty Italian food on offer?
