Part medieval festival, part Christmas fair, Genoa's annual Medieval Christmas Market is a magical, historic and festive delight for the senses.
- When? TBC Dec 2017
- Where? Piazza Caricamento, Genoa, Italy
- Price: Free
Dubbed Europe's most unusual festive market, the ever-popular Genoa Christmas celebration is one of a kind and all the more charming for it. Delightfully traditional, the event is completely themed around the medieval period, with locals going all out to make the experience as authentic as possible.
The main square - Piazza Caricamento - is re-created to look like a village from 1000 AD, complete with a medieval farm where children can learn how to milk. Artists, street performers and stall-holders don traditional attire and visitors can purchase local meats, cheeses and handicrafts. Dotted around the square are story-tellers, choirs, medieval dancers and musicians.
Genoa itself is a UNESCO listed world heritage site so it's a perfect backdrop for this festive, historic display. The Ye Olde atmosphere helps create a sense of authentic Christmas spirit and it's also possible to traverse the ancient streets in between perusing stalls. So don your jester hat and get going to Genoa (only joking, no one looks good in a jester hat).
- Get there: Fly to Genoa and make your way to the Piazza Caricamento using public transport.
- Stay: Find accommodation in Carignano or San Vincenzo so you won't have far to travel.
