The festival goes back to the Middle Ages and always features song and dance. The celebration really took off from the late 1800s and in 1853, a singing contest was introduced which became hugely popular. The contest has since spawned internationally acclaimed hits such as ‘Te Voglio Bene Assaje’ made famous by Italian national treasure Pavarotti.
The events are attended by thousands who take to the streets to enjoy the live music and elaborate floats. The festival comprises of three parts, a concert in Piazza Plebiscito, a grand parade of floats travelling from the Palazzo Reale to the basilica and the Audizioni competition which showcases new music from up and coming artists from the city.
