Get ready to sample Italy's newly released wines in November with several events held across Umbria throughout the month.
Ever since we queued at midnight outside Waterstone's for the latest Harry Potter book, we've had a bit of a thing for new releases. Umbria's New Wine Festival, held every November, is no exception. One of the best places to be is Perugia and the quaint towns that surround it, all of which authentically celebrate this historic unveiling.
Italian tradition stipulates that vini novelli (new wines) - a lighter style of red - are not permitted to be released until November 4th. As such, when it's finally ready, celebrations are held to mark the occasion. Plenty of towns, such as Perugia, hold wine tasting festivals which feature the new batch - events are also held in the towns of Narni, Torgiano and Pontassieve. As well as festival stalls and tastings in restaurants, there are also wine competitions, wine based feasts and culinary demos on how to cook with the local plonk.
If you like your wine and also the idea of a booze-based countdown, then Perugia's New Wine festival is definitely one for your late autumn travel diary. And hey, it might not be a new Harry Potter book but this annual event is still sure to be pretty magical.
