- Where? Perugia
- Price: Free
If your trip to Perugia coincides with the 11th and 12th of June, you might feel like you've accidently walked into a time machine and been zapped to the 15th century. Perugia 1416 pays tribute to the Battle of Sant'Egidio by re-enacting this historic event and taking the city back to the Middle Ages with some good old-fashioned entertainment.
On the 12th July 1416, the troops of Braccio Fortebraccio triumphed against the men of Carlo Malatesta to crown Braccio the Lord of Perugia. This is now celebrated on the same date today and is a highly anticipated event for the locals, who decorate the city in medieval style.
Many spectators and competitors are dressed in medieval attire and over the weekend you can expect to see a variety of entertainment typical of the Middle Ages, including jugglers, fire eaters and stilt walkers. A number of musicians, dancers and singers will also have people up on their feet (and guarantee a good party). Competitions organised for the five city districts to compete in see each community aiming for 'supremacy' of the city - plus prize money to restore a monument in their local area.
Although Perugia 1416 isn't necessarily one of the biggest events in Italy, if you happen to be in town why not indulge in a blast from the past? After all, time machines won't be coming to our stores any time soon.
