What's the best thing about a carnival? Being able to act like a child for a day and it being perfectly acceptable of course! And it's no different at the carnival celebrations leading up to Shrove Tuesday throughout Umbria and in the city of Perugia.
At this time of year you'll find a carnival or a similar celebration in almost every city and town in Umbria. Celebrations start as early as the 19th of January, with mask workshops and exhibitions setting the stage for February's antics.
Perugia celebrates the old protagonist of the carnival and Bartoccio from Pian del Tevere is known as the carnival's mask. You can expect a host of festivities including parades and a program of events that involve music, dance and general merrymaking. The whole occasion is a colourful affair with extravagant costumes and masks worn by many who attend.
So if you happen to be in the city, give your other half the heads up and have fun being childish for a day or two.
- Get there: The festival takes place all over Perugia, so fly to Umbria International Airport and then take a taxi to the city centre. You'll arrive in 25 minutes.
- Stay: Book accommodation in the north of the city to be close to many of Perugia's other attractions.
