Warm weather, lots of booze and ample sausages - nope, we're not talking about a 'lads on tour' city break. Welcome to the pretty town of Chiaramonte Gulfi in southern Sicily, which hosts the Sagra della Sicsicila (Sicilian Sausage Festival) every February. With plenty of locally produced meats and treats, this mouth-watering event has a lot more taste than your average stag weekender.
The festival - which coincides with some carnival events - celebrates local farmers and their homemade sausages and cured meats. Popular with locals, Sicilians travel from across the island to sample some of the best this region has to offer; particular specialities include salami and mortadella. There are also traditional stalls selling handicrafts and other goods including honey, jams and cheeses.
We're not ones to advocate too much drinking, but booze goes best with Sagra della Sicsicila's wares - we suggest a cold limoncello or smooth Chianti. Even if you're a vegetarian, the festival can still be enjoyed; there's plenty of 'cucina' (home cooked) dishes available to taste and try from the stalls around the central Duomo area. We'll take that over a messy bender any day of the week.
- Get there: Hire a car and enjoy a scenic drive from Sicily to Chiaramonte Gulfi
- Stay: Find a hotel in Sicily and visit the festival on a day trip.
