Known as the biggest event in the Venetian rowing calendar, Venice's Historical Regatta takes place on the first Sunday of September, with dozens of sixteenth century boats parading along the Grand Canal as thousands of onlookers take in the atmosphere.
Following the historical procession, which commemorates Caterina Cornaro, wife of the King of Cyprus, comes the 'race of champions', or 'Campioni su Gondolini'.
Venice's spectacular water race is a crowd favourite, which sees themed gondoliers racing along the river before arriving at Ca’ Foscari palace, which was built for the doge Francesco Foscari in 1453.
- Get there: The grand canal winds its way through the centre of Venice, so should be easy to find. Prepare to walk as water taxis will most likely not be running.
- Stay: Book accommodation in San Marco or San Polo to be nearby. Hotels with canal views may book up early.
