The Feast of St Mark is a local public holiday that sees the streets of Venice lined with concerts, carnivals and bustling markets.
Many businesses and public offices are closed on the day, which traditionally looks back at Venice's patron saint, St Mark (San Marco), who died on April 25th in 68 CE. Saint Mark was one of Christ’s disciples and the writer of the Gospel of Mark.
This traditional occasion is typically associated with love and romance and the day was once known as Festival of the Blooming Rose. As a result, many Venetian men are known still to gift their loved ones with rose buds during the event.
- Get there: Fly to Venice Marco Polo Airport (VCE) and then drive or take the train to the city centre. Get around using water taxis.
- Stay: Book accommodation in the San Marco or San Polo areas to be nearby.
