If you're a fan of fancy dress and spend as much time planning your look as Bridget Jones spends looking for love, look no further than Venice Carnival. This hugely popular event explodes into life towards the end of winter with a number of dramatically costumed events entertaining the thousands who visit.
Venice is the place to be this February when the carnival's atmosphere sweeps through this romantic city. A stage in St Mark's Square features the festival's finest competition where you'll see hundreds of people in extravagant and colourful attire as they compete for the best dressed outfit.
Various ticket-only events can be experienced over the weeks and the main ones can usually be found in places such as the Arsenale (Venice's shipyard) and Palazzo Flangini. Located all across this historic city, they include masked balls, grand banquets and even a Venice carnival party cruise. Tickets are priced from €27 to €350 (for the most popular events) and getting your hands on one can be a job in itself.
If you arrive during the week, the atmosphere can be rather subdued, but it's at the weekends when the city really comes to life. Restaurants and bars are heaving and the best Venetian performers are out to entertain the crowd, making Saturday's and Sunday's the best time to see Venice Carnival at its elaborate and emphatic best.
Just remember, this carnival is in one of the world's most romantic cities so if your love life draws comparisons to Bridget Jones', what better place to be? You better get planning that stellar look.
