Jesters, markets and sail boats - don't worry, you've not accidently fallen into a time machine. Instead, we've journeyed to the Rīga City Festival for a weekend of music, theatre, dance and exhibitions. Celebrating summer and all things creative, this August event is perfect for kids and big kids alike.
For two days, Rīga turns into a citywide party area, complete with wacky performances and chuckling crowds. The festival harks back to yesteryear, when sailing boats would arrive along the Daugava River carrying a wealth of foreign goods. Traditional dishes - such as herring - would be served and the city's elite would descend to shop for exotic purchases. Today, the festival has a more contemporary carnival-esque atmosphere, with impromptu street performances, fancy dress, clowning antics and live musicians; there are also plenty of water based events on boats.
If your inner shopaholic beckons then there are several markets to visit over the weekend, which sell everything from tasty local treats to handmade goods and clothing. Our top tip? Book hotels early; the festival attracts thousands of revellers to the city and accommodation can get snapped up quickly. Part of its popularity is because this weekender has something for everyone and while the festival definitely embraces modern Rīga, there's plenty of ye olde' charm to keep history geeks happy too.
