If you like your festivals as colourful as a clown's birthday party then Colours of Malaysia ticks all the right boxes. It'll also keep your inner culture-vulture happy and is a fun, inclusive way to spend an evening. With everything from floats to marching bands, comedic dancers to light parades, the festival offers a magical insight into Malaysian tradition.
Known locally as Citrawarna (which means colour in Malay), the bright and vibrant festival (which takes place every year) attracts festive locals and curious visitors alike. The traditional dances, food stalls, performances and multi-hued Malaysian costumes make this a great way to immerse yourself in local culture and customs.
Part parade, part performance, the event is held in Merdeka Square - one of the city's central thoroughfares - and celebrates the diversity and uniqueness of Malaysia and its peoples. Over 7,000 performers take part - from professionals to school students and over one hundred thousand visitors flock to see the spectacle.
Highlights include traditional choreographed 'dance stories' (which chart the history of the country), national bands and local musicians. If you're planning to make an evening of it, there are plenty of food stalls available and Chinatown is nearby if you're looking for a sit down meal.
Don your most colourful attire (clown suits optional) and head down in the early evening; Colours of Malaysia usually begins at around 5 p.m. and runs through until midnight. The main event happens at around 9.30 p.m.; get there early if you want a good view.
- Get there: Merdeka Square is centrally located with many public transport stops nearby - take the train to Masjid Jamek and then walk.
- Stay: Book accommodation in Bukit Bintang to be nearby.
